Im Mühlviertel sagt man, es braucht drei Dinge, um ein erwachsener Mann zu werden:
Man muss ein Kind zeugen, ein Haus bauen und einen Baum pflanzen.
Benedikt Mitmannsgruber ist kein Mann wie alle anderen.
Er ist dünn, schwach, hat einen Schnauzbart, trägt einen alten Norwegerpullover und ist ein klassischer Antiheld, ein sensibler Losertyp.
Statt ein Haus zu bauen und Vater zu werden, sitzt er mit einer Tasse Johanniskrauttee in einem spärlich eingerichteten Hinterzimmer in einer tristen Großstadt und schreibt lustige Geschichten. Irgendwann begreift seine Familie, dass er nicht altert.
Während seine Freunde immer älter werden, Verantwortung übernehmen, Autos kaufen, Kinder zeugen und arbeiten, steckt Mitmannsgruber in der Zeit fest. Er möchte ewig Mitte 20 bleiben.
Immer weiter schiebt er das Erwachsenwerden hinaus, bis es unerreichbar und uneinholbar vor ihm liegt.
Eines Tages packt er seine Sachen. Ohne Ziel vor Augen zieht er durch die Bühnen Österreichs und Deutschlands. Er spielt im Fernsehen, gewinnt Preise und bekommt anonym Unterwäsche zugeschickt.
